Behind the Scenes: How AustMystik Candles Are Made

Every AustMystik candle starts in a small studio in Wollongong, on the South Coast of NSW. There's no factory, no production line, no machines doing the work. It's just Danielle — measuring, melting, pouring, and checking every single candle by hand.
Here's what goes into making one of our candles from start to finish.
Step 1: Choosing the Wax
It starts with the wax. We use a premium soy wax blend that's chosen for its clean burn, excellent scent throw, and smooth finish. Soy wax is a natural, renewable resource — it burns cleaner than paraffin (the wax used in most mass-produced candles) and doesn't release the same soot or toxins.
The wax arrives in large blocks and gets measured out for each batch. A “batch” at AustMystik might be 10-20 candles — small enough to maintain quality control on every single one.
Step 2: Melting & Temperature Control
The wax is melted slowly to the right temperature — too hot and the fragrance oil evaporates before it can bond with the wax; too cool and it won't mix properly. This step requires patience and precision. Danielle monitors the temperature throughout, adjusting for the specific wax blend and fragrance being used.
Step 3: Adding the Fragrance
This is where the magic happens. Premium fragrance oils are added at a specific temperature to ensure maximum scent throw — that's the industry term for how strongly a candle smells when lit. We load our fragrances at a higher ratio than most mass-produced candles, which is why our customers consistently comment on how strong and long-lasting the scent is.
With 58 fragrances in the range, there's a lot of variety to work with — from Australian bush and eucalyptus to vanilla, champagne, and mango.
Step 4: Preparing the Vessel & Wick
While the wax cools to pouring temperature, each jar or tin is prepared. The wick is centred and secured at the bottom — wick placement matters more than you'd think. An off-centre wick causes uneven burning, tunnelling, and a shorter candle life. Every wick is positioned by hand and checked before pouring.
We use cotton wicks that are sized specifically for each vessel. A wick that's too small won't create a full melt pool; too large and the flame will be smoky and the candle will burn too fast.
Step 5: The Pour
The fragranced wax is poured by hand into each vessel at precisely the right temperature. Pour too hot and the candle can crack or develop sinkholes. Pour too cool and the surface won't be smooth. Each pour is done carefully, and the candles are left to cure undisturbed.
Step 6: Curing
After pouring, candles need time to cure — this is the period where the fragrance oil fully bonds with the wax. A well-cured candle has a noticeably stronger scent throw than one that's rushed to shelves. We allow our candles adequate curing time before they're labelled and shipped.
Step 7: Labelling & Quality Check
Every candle gets a final inspection — checking the surface finish, wick position, and overall appearance. Then the label goes on. For personalised orders, this is where custom labels with names, dates, photos, or messages are applied. Each label is designed individually and proofed with the customer before application.
The finished candle is packaged carefully for shipping. We take extra care with packaging because candles are fragile — proper padding and secure boxing means your candle arrives in perfect condition.
Why Small-Batch Matters
Making candles in small batches means we can catch issues before they become problems. If a batch doesn't meet our standards, it doesn't ship. That level of quality control simply isn't possible when you're producing thousands of candles on a factory line.
It also means we can be flexible — custom fragrances, personalised labels, and bespoke gift packages are all possible because we're not locked into a rigid production schedule.
